Day 3 Reconnaissance of CT trail

Day 3 Reconnaissance of CT trail (Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail) which we plan to start paddling next week. Today we finished scouting the Big Bend section of the Florida Gulf Coast.

We:

  • located the market, hardware (fuel) store, landing and friendly motel (which does laundry!) in Steinhatchee (they even have a two-bedroom cottage right on the river if anyone wants to join us!),
  • found the dock, bathrooms and the supposedly primitive kayak campsite at the remote Econfina State Park (at least the one the campground gal pointed out to us, but it’s different than the one described in the guide which we didn’t find), and
  • found the unattractive but do-able campground full of chickens and confederate flags at Silver Creek.

Off task (because it’s not on the paddling trail so we won’t be able to use it on our paddle), we also found a great latte in Perry, Florida, and tonight’s fabulous, uncrowded campground south of Tallahassee at the Sopchoppy Town Park where $15 gets you riverfront full hookups with (drum roll) hot showers!

The panhandle weather forecast shows tonight as the final night with temps dropping as low as the upper 30s, which bodes well for starting our paddling trip.
