Have you ever had a Macuá? And did you know it was Nicaragua’s national drink?
It’s my, and John’s, favorite drink and Buen Gusto, on the beach in San Juan del Sur, makes the very best one.
We’ve had a friend visiting from the States, so two nights ago we took him to Buen Gusto for a Macuá. He talked about it all night, vowing he’ll learn to make one in the States. Then he insisted we go back again last night since he was leaving this morning. So we did.
Last night it was Guillermo who was mixing drinks and Ricardo who was serving.
It’s made with white Flor de Cana rum, Guayaba juice (Guava juice), Orange juice, lime juice and a little bit of sugar. And of course ice. Some restaurants serve it on the rocks but Buen Gusto’s are served frozen.
During Happy Hour they have 2 for 1 of their smaller portioned drink. But for the same price you can get one large one, so that’s what we did.
On Thursdays, Ricardo told me, a Macuá comes with two free tostones topped with the fried local cheese. We just might consider making Macuás at Buen Gusto a habit on Thursdays.
Price: 80 cords ($2.50 US)
It’s Nicaragua delicious.
